Honestly, it often feels to me like a fulfillment of what SC1 only could dream it could be! : StarCraft, : Brood War, : 02:20, : 2.69, : 192 kbit/sec, : mp3. For the new version, they’ll be including the option to have the factions you play as a bad against use appropriate skins created in SC2 that correspond to what different factions in SC1 would have (e.g., Nerazim skins for Dark Templar bases when relevant, etc.). All cinematics from the original are included. The experience will certainly be slightly different mechanically, but they’ve done an amazing job of creating cutscenes (in a visual sense, I mean) and things for the same original voice acting that highlight what’s going on in ways the original just couldn’t. It is super-well done, actually - they’re about to release version 7.0, and they not only love the original, but have a legion of fans who do as well and keep them honest! Actually, they even include a couple of missions as optional that were on the original CD but scrapped from the game - they recreated them for anyone who wants to experience them.

Once that goes live, StarCraft and the Brood War expansion will both be made free for everyonenot free-to-play, as Blizzard emphasized, but straight-up free. IMO Protoss two protoss missions, and the last UED mission are extremely difficult (the last UED mission is almost absurdly difficult to beat actually). The AI isn't genius or anything, but the AI will always rebuild lost buildings if it has the chance too making doing small amounts of damage less useful. Matchmaking should be coming with the Remaster release, and will be available to everyone. StarCraft: Remastered will be an optional additional purchase available later this year.

Anyone can download and play the game for free with the improvements as of 1.18. Mass Recall on its hardest setting is like waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay harder than SC BW was (idk how remastered is) though. StarCraft: Brood War is going completely free-to-play on March 30th with the 1.18 patch. It also has difficulty options (not present in the orig).
